William Forsythe: Improvisation Technologies
Published in CD-ROM by Hatje Cantz Publishers (June, 2000)
Authors: William Forsythe, ZKM Karlsruhe, and Roslyn Sulcas
Average review score:

the notebook i wish i'd had for the class...
i had the esteemed privilege of working with bill forsythe in a week long intensive class while he was visiting ucla during the spring of 2001. he spoke about most of the processes you will find on this cd-rom; however, the cd-rom is MUCH easier to follow than some of the class discussions we had... bill is a genius and sometimes left everyone in the room with blank looks on their faces, because he would jump into an idea without remembering that we didn't necessarily know the train of thought that got him to the idea he was currently discussing... that is definitely not a problem on the cd-rom -- it is exceedingly clear, and the concepts are demonstrated in actual choreographic examples. the disc is well organized, and very inciteful. if the ideas themselves aren't interesting enough, there's the fabulous design and layout of the whole package that will keep you fiddling for a long time. this is a must for anyone interested in bill forsythe, choreographic processes, dance for visual media, design for movement arts, and movement improvisation. check out bill's solo which is included on the disc as well!!

Watching Impro
The CD Rom format for this resource, allows for a visual insight into Forsythe's improvisation techniques. Planned initially as a training tool for new members of his company, the CD Rom offers much more for the analytical eye.

The format is very slick and the interface provides for easy navigation aroung an aesthetically pleasing environment. For those studying Forsythe's work, the resource is a must, as not only does Forsythe explain characteristic techniques such as room writing, but several performances by Forsythe as well as by other dancers, demonstrate each of the processes.

The 3D format is certainly the most appealing feature of the resource, and one which makes it stand apart from other resources on choreographers or improvisation.

Complicated Losses, Difficult Deaths: A Practical Guide for Ministering to Grievers
Published in Paperback by Resource Publications (December, 1999)
Author: Roslyn A., Phd Karaban
Average review score:

A Practical Grief Work Tool
As the title suggests, this IS a practical guide for ministering to grievers. It has basic and clear information about the subject written so the layman comprehends. As a pastor and certified grief group facilitator, I will be keeping this book handy for reference. It is easy to find topics from the Contents page and lots of great lists of issues are in the chapters. I also like the Questions as the end of each chapter which can be used for personal study or in service work. The Appendix has information that would be very useful as a trainning tool. The End Notes are exceptional and useful. Thank You for such a helpful reference in my work with grieving persons.

Easy on the eyes; a little tougher on the brain.
This series is easy to read and laid out conveniently. The puzzles are challenging without being insane. These are my mom's current favorites, and I would recommend them to fans of the crossword puzzles appearing in the NY Times or LA Times.

Lover, Traitor: A Jerusalem Story
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (September, 1997)
Authors: Roslyn Theobald and Anna Mitgutsch
Average review score:

An Inside View of the Intifada
Although it was published seven years ago, this hauntingly prescient novel about intimate and political relations between Israelis and Palestinians provides the reader with both a very satisfying literary experience and an insight into the roots of the current conflict in the Holy Land. Mitgutsch's story centers around a European Jewish woman's search for a lost relative in Israel. Although she never finds her great aunt who was most likely killed during the Holocaust, Devorah discovers how the diversity of people and culture that comprise Jerusalem makes this timeless city as fascinating and mysterious as it is treacherous. Against this backdrop Mitgutsch creates a story of passion and betrayal as Devorah gets into a shady relationship with a much younger man whose ambiguous background and terrorist friends almost make her an accomplice in a terrorist plot. Mitgutsch's masterful exploration of how political intrigue intersects with personal tragedy makes her novel one of the most worthwhile reads in contemporary fiction. Not surprisingly, this novel was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award.

The Mole Sisters and the Question (Mole Sisters)

Perfectly pleasing
I am a big fan of this series. I find them absolutely perfect for pre-schoolers, and my three young children adore them. The illustrations are utterly charming, and the text is simple yet beautifully chosen. This is my current favourite of the eight--but they're all so lovely that I never get tired of reading them or of giving them as gifts.

The Mole Sisters and the Wavy Wheat (Mole Sisters)

Perfect for Preschool
It is always delightful to see good new books for children, and I believe that the "Mole Sisters" will become nursery classics. The illustration of the entire series is exquisite--simple, yet vivid and witty. The prose is spare, with each word perfectly chosen, and room for parent-child extended discussion of the action. The characters are charming, likeable, confident, and optimistic without being in any way saccharine. My daughter was given several of the Mole Sisters books as a 2nd birthday present, since which I have bought the others for ourselves, and have bought all of them, many times over, as gifts for other children. My daughter, now 3, began reading to herself at a very early age, and these were among the first books that she read alone. My two younger children are also choosing these over and over again to have read to them. Because of the gently philosophical subject matter of the books they are also entirely suitable for slightly older children, who will easily master the text, but who will then have questions about the topics raised. My advice is: get them all. If you don't want to take the risk, then get one--frankly, at this price you can afford to take a chance--and I'm sure that you'll want the others. They are all wonderful, although my own favourite (by a small margin)is "Wavy Wheat".
